52 mm
52 MM FOR 61 TONS OF RESISTANCE!
Did you know that the large passenger ferries of the Compagnie Océane, which provide connections between Belle-Île and mainland France, moor to waiting buoys outside the port of Palais? And that the buoys are themselves connected to their ballast by a textile mooring line? The underwater works company Tetis asked Ino-Rope to design textile cables to replace traditional mooring chains.
The new mooring lines were installed last March and, believe it or not, they are only 52 mm in diameter with a breaking load of 61 tons! It’s impressive, but there is room for improvement! The recent revision of the lines in Ino-Rope’s workshops first confirmed (if there was still any doubt) that textile cables are a particularly relevant alternative to chains. It then demonstrated that the system can still be optimized.
Now that the belief “you need a thick rope for a big boat” has been debunked and the installation has been tested, Ino-Rope plans to reduce the sampling of its mooring lines and to develop a new product to complement its range of standardized ropes.
