On Friday, September 18, Ludovic Fortin, head of operations, and Yannick Scolan, technical agent, installed two ecological moorings in the municipal port of Trébeurden. A textile mooring line replaces the large, long chain that connects the buoy to the seabed. “Every chain dragging on the seabed degrades it over an area of about one hundred square meters,” explains Maïwenn Le Borgne, LTC project manager.
Restoring Seagrass Meadows
LTC, as the operator for the Natura 2000 site “Côte de Granit Rose – Sept Îles,” is responsible for implementing the restoration of seagrass meadows (flowering plants). « This type of underwater meadow is a reservoir of biodiversity, », says Maïwenn Le Borgne.
The municipal port of Trébeurden is located above one of these meadows. Therefore, the municipality has been committed for the past two years, in partnership with LTC, to protecting these areas.
An Innovative Technology
The Ino-Rope company, a specialist in ropes, worked with the technical services of the town hall to develop a mooring suitable for the significant tidal ranges. A bungee cord can be inserted into the rope to provide elasticity. “It is an extremely durable material that should last several decades, but the bungee cord needs to be replaced every 4 or 5 years,” explains Guillaume Delemar, Ino-Rope’s sales manager. “We are already considering improvements.”
An Experiment
« It’s much lighter and easier to handle than chains,», notes Yannick Scolan. « here’s no need for a boat or diver to install them, », adds Ludovic Fortin. The project includes installing ten innovative mooring lines. The next ones will be installed in March 2021 in deeper water. The project’s evaluation will be done using aerial photos that reveal gaps in the seagrass meadow. « The company LittoMatique took pictures before the moorings were installed and will take more in two years », says the project manager.
The state funds 80% of the €18,600 project cost, with the municipality covering the remaining 20%. About fifty moorings are expected to be affected in the long term in the port.
