Grain de Sail

THE PROJECT
Client : Grain de Sail
Sector : Cargo transport by sail
Project Dates : 2021 – 2022
Project Location : Lorient
Order
Pre-study for the definition of the deck plan of the sailboat Grain de Sail 2 sailboat (52 m by 10.7 m, 1500 m² of sails, and 350 tons carrying capacity).
How Ino-Rope responds:
Based on the list of maneuvers and the theoretical maximum loads at the halyard/sheet points provided by the architect, Ino-Rope’s design office defined appropriate diameters and materials. The unique aspect of this project is the choice of a safety factor of 4 to meet the client’s reliability and durability requirements. For cruising ropes, the safety factor is usually 3. For offshore racing, it is 2 or even less! Ino-Rope submitted the obtained diameters to the architect to work on the deck plan. For example, the solution of a block and tackle halyard (two-part tackle) was proposed to reduce the diameter (20 mm instead of 42) while ensuring the desired breaking load.
Challenges:
- Meeting the reliability specifications specific to maritime transport
- Offering affordable, off-the-shelf standard products that are quickly available because they are in stock or easy to produce
- Creating simple and reasonable solutions adapted to the reality of maneuvers on a sailboat and easily repairable
Ino-Rope’s strengths in responding:
Being independent from a single supplier, Ino-Rope was able to select the best quality/price ratio with, for example, ropes made of UHMPE (generic Dyneema material). With a workshop team of up to eight people and efficient logistics, the company from Concarneau is capable of quickly producing and shipping.
