Ciel & Terre Project

THE PROJECT
Client : Ciel & Terre
Sector : Renewable energy
Project Dates : 2020 – ongoing
Project Location : Various sites worldwide, then implementation on specific projects.
Client Activity : Installation of floating photovoltaic fields
Order:
- Expertise mission in reverse engineering on the ropes used in existing photovoltaic fields
- R&D mission to develop and produce new mooring lines using ropes specifically designed for this purpose
How Ino-Rope responds:
Ino-Rope tested, through a series of trials, the reference ropes from the mooring lines that Ciel & Terre retained for each new installation. The company, having used local suppliers for each new site, accumulated a total of 30,000 references of ropes, thimbles, and splices. Some textile solutions implemented were not suited to the environments they were installed in.
Ino-Rope conducted a battery of tests and measurements on the test bench for these reference ropes to anticipate future problems. Meanwhile, the R&D department designed new ropes specifically to meet Ciel & Terre’s needs. Using these ropes, Ino-Rope developed and produced new cable solutions aimed at ensuring safety and cost rationalization.
Challenges:
The main challenge was to scientifically calculate the aging of the mooring lines and to find suitable materials to meet durability and reliability requirements. Ino-Rope observed that engineers often face challenges due to a lack of knowledge about textiles: traditional tools for calculating structure and elongation are not suitable as they were designed for metal cables. Additionally, this project raised the issue of the precision tolerance Ino-Rope can provide for large-scale production.
Ino-Rope’s strengths in responding:
Ino-Rope is a relevant player because it is independent of the various rope manufacturers it works with. Objective analysis and access to testing tools provide real added value. Thanks to an efficient partnership with the Lancelin rope factory, Ino-Rope was able to design new ropes tailored to the client’s needs within six months.
Perspectives
The Ino-Rope team aims to undertake a comprehensive expertise mission to design a new solution that can be applied to all photovoltaic fields worldwide. This solution would include the development of suitable textile cables and an optimized installation system, with the goal of extending the lifespan of the mooring lines as much as possible. The objective is to achieve a longevity of 30 years.
